(St Kilda was named after a schooner named Lady of St Kilda (which moored at the main beach for much of 1841) by Charles La Trobe and former ship master and early settler Lieutenant James Ross Lawrence.)

The beautifully landscaped Albert Park Lake with its swans, ducks and little boats is also home of the Grand Prix circuit every March. It boasts 225-hectares of beautiful parkland including a picturesque lake and network of trails. The park is a beacon to sporting and recreation enthusiasts with a superb 18 hole golf course, golf driving range, walking and cycling tracks and on-water activities. Other facilities include picnic tables, barbecue areas, playgrounds, restaurants and toilets.

St. Kilda and surrounding beaches - great for swimming, walking, jogging, bike riding or roller blading.

Southbank promenade forms part of the Capital City Bicycle Trail, which circles the Melbourne city centre and some inner eastern and northern suburbs. A popular starting point for the trail is at Princes Bridge near Flinders Street Station. Bikes can be hired near the boathouses east of the bridge.
